GUIPSY: Graphical User Interface for Groningen Image Processing Package
The Groningen Image Processing System (GIPSY), developed at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, is one of the most powerful systems available for analysis, modelling and visualization of multi-dimensional data, especially spectral line analysis and galaxy modelling. In 2011, a collaboration between the AMIGA group and the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute was consolidated in order to modernize and improve GIPSY so to comply with modern standards and environments for astronomical software.
Present and future spectroscopic instruments in the optical (FP, IFUs) and radio (ALMA, SKA), will provide a wealth of 3D information and its users will strongly benefit from this effort. In this context, in order to make GIPSY available to a larger scientific user base than the specialized radio astronomy community, it was essential to make a proper connection to the VO environment. This is what has been achieved with GUIPSY (Graphical User Interface for Groningen Image Processing Package). The improvements included in GUIpsy are:
- Upgrade of the availability of the package, implying easy to install software with very few software dependencies for the core functionality.
- Creation of graphical interfaces for all the core applications –including the control program Hermes– to enable context-aware sensible defaults for task parameters and easy access to different levels of help information.
- Full integration into the Virtual Observatory in order to allow access to all available VO data, such as catalogues, images, spectra or any eventual 3D catalogue.
- Improvement of the documentation of scientific procedures hidden in the software.
- Add new functionalities to the core and improve the communication with potential users.
- Interoperability with other VO software and archives, allowing not only efficient multi-wavelength comparisons but also the possibility to contribute to and benefit from the growing ecosystem of VO software, services and data.
In addition, GIPSY has been updated with these new features:
- Enhancement of the data structure to support large data sets (larger that 2 GB).
- Improving viewers in order to run in 24-bits true colour mode and be fully interactive.
- Full compatibility with radio synthesis data, in particular with future ALMA data.
Links to Gipsy Survey
In support of this effort we seek information from the astronomical community to find out what aspects of analysis software, such as present in GIPSY, serves their needs and what aspects are most important. The results of this survey will be used in defining all functional specifications needed for the conception and design of a more powerful new GIPSY package. Technical specifications will also be defined taking also into account several aspects as modularity, portability and scalability. Your contribution to this survey is therefore very important for this development and we greatly appreciate your input.
