SRC-Link: Sustainability approach for prototyping the SKA Regional Centre network.

The SKA Regional Centres Network (SRCNet) will serve as a platform for accessing SKAO data, the analysis tools as well as the processing power necessary to fully exploit their science potential. The SRCNet will be a collaborative platform enabling researchers to interchange scientific knowledge in a Big Data context.
The IAA-CSIC team is leading the development of the Spanish SRC as well as the implementation of a scaled-down version of the international SRCNet platform key for the evaluation of technologies to be used in its implementation. IAA-CSIC is contributing as well to the SRCNet development by applying Sustainability and Open Science principles to enhance the accessibility and reusability of the SKAO data and methods. This work, as the Open Science in general, impacts on areas related to some of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contributing to democratise scientific information (SDG: 3, 4). Open Science also promotes the inclusion of underrepresented groups and reduces inequalities in the access to knowledge (SDG: 17, 10, 5). The SRCNet will be underpinned by big HPC centres providing the computing resources required to analyse more than 700PB of data per year. Ensuring an optimal use of energy in these centres is key and the IAA-CSIC is contributing to this challenge, adding the green perspective in the evaluation of technologies for the SRCNet (SDG: 12,13).
The data reception from the first SKAO antennas in 2025 provides a unique opportunity for the SRCNet to test and improve the prototypes being developed. Consequently, in the SRCNet framework an intensive collaboration is planned for 2024 and 2025 to allow teams to closely work together and to ensure that SRCNet services are ready for this phase.
This SRC-link proposal’s objectives are to consolidate the international collaboration of key institutions participating in the SRCNet (bringing the European perspective to the network) as well as CSIC leadership, and to ensure that the SRCNet platform is optimised for an efficient data analysis in line with the SDGs, maximising the potential of the SRCNet and the forthcoming SKAO data, while promoting Open Science principles and sustainability.
The SRC-Link proposal will reinforce the role of the IAA-CSIC as an Open Science and green computing champion within the SKAO and the SRCNet collaboration.
