El Observatorio del SKA (SKAO) está construyendo dos radiotelescopios de nueva generación. Estos producirán volúmenes de datos sin precedentes, cuya explotación científica requiere una red global y distribuida de centros de computación y datos. Estos centros, conocidos como Centros Regionales del SKAO (SRCs), actúan como nodos de datos y ciencia que permiten el acceso y el análisis de los datos del SKAO por parte de la comunidad internacional. El Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC, Granada, España) [1]  lidera el desarrollo del prototipo del Centro Regional Español del SKA con el apoyo de su programa Severo Ochoa.

El prototipo del SRC español (espSRC) fue el primer centro acreditado como nodo de la red internacional de SRCs, actualmente formada por nueve nodos distribuidos en todo el mundo. Este puesto ofrece la oportunidad de desarrollar capacidades avanzadas de computación en el proyecto de astrofísica más ambicioso de la década.

El espSRC busca con urgencia un/a ingeniero/a de Sistemas/IT motivado/a, con experiencia en administración de sistemas informáticos y servicios en la nube, para cubrir un puesto de IT. La persona seleccionada será el/la administrador/a de sistemas (sysadmin) del clúster de computación del espSRC y se incorporará al equipo del espSRC liderado por Lourdes Verdes-Montenegro, coordinadora de la participación española en el proyecto SKA.

El puesto está ubicado en el IAA-CSIC en Granada, una ciudad histórica y vibrante, a los pies de Sierra Nevada y a poca distancia en coche de la costa mediterránea. La persona seleccionada participará en este proyecto internacional como parte de un equipo multidisciplinar de astrónomos e ingenieros con amplia experiencia en infraestructuras de computación distribuida, computación en la nube, ciencia de datos y radioastronomía. Será el/la sysadmin del clúster de computación del espSRC, una plataforma en la nube (basada en OpenStack) que proporciona servicios de computación mediante máquinas virtuales y un clúster de Kubernetes, así como servicios de almacenamiento basados en un sistema Ceph.

Funciones

La persona seleccionada se incorporará al espSRC en el IAA-CSIC (Granada, España), liderado por Lourdes Verdes-Montenegro, coordinadora de la participación española en el proyecto SKA. Las responsabilidades del puesto incluirán:

  • Mantenimiento de la infraestructura actual de computación y almacenamiento del espSRC en el IAA-CSIC.
  • Contribuir a posibles ampliaciones de la infraestructura de computación del espSRC: identificación de requisitos técnicos, apoyo en la adquisición de nuevo hardware y en la ampliación de la plataforma.
  • Despliegue de herramientas y servicios en la plataforma del espSRC.
  • Proporcionar soporte técnico a usuarios.

Requisitos

Las personas candidatas deberán contar con un doctorado o máster en informática o en áreas afines (por ejemplo, física o matemáticas). Se buscan candidatos/as proactivos/as, con buenas habilidades de comunicación en inglés y experiencia en varios de los siguientes aspectos:

  • Administración de sistemas y despliegue de aplicaciones (por ejemplo, usando Ansible).
  • Entorno Linux y scripting en bash.

  • Plataformas de computación en la nube: OpenStack, Ceph, contenedores y orquestadores (p. ej., Kubernetes).

  • Infraestructuras de computación distribuida.

  • Sistemas de control de versiones (Git).

Además de lo anterior, se valorará especialmente el conocimiento en los siguientes ámbitos:

  • Despliegue y personalización de JupyterHub.
  • Desarrollo de software en Python.
  • Desarrollo y despliegue de servicios y aplicaciones web.
  • Software específico del dominio de la astrofísica.

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is building two next-generation radio telescopes. They will produce such unprecedented volumes of data that their scientific exploitation requires a global, distributed network of computing and data centres. These centres, known as SKAO Regional Centres (SRCs), act as data and science hubs that enable access to and analysis of SKAO data by the international community. The Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA-CSIC, Granada, Spain) [1] leads the development of the Spanish SKA Regional Centre prototype with support from its Severo Ochoa programme. The Spanish SRC prototype (espSRC) was the first centre to be accredited as a node of the international SRC Network, currently formed by nine nodes located worldwide. This position offers the opportunity to apply cutting-edge computing skills to the most ambitious astrophysics project of the decade.

The espSRC is urgently seeking a motivated System/IT engineer with experience in computer system administration and cloud services to fill in an IT position: the successful candidate will be the sysadmin of the espSRC computing cluster and will join the espSRC team led by Lourdes Verdes-Montenegro, the coordinator of the Spanish participation in the SKA project.

The position is based at the IAA-CSIC in Granada, a historic, vibrant city at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and a short drive from the Mediterranean coast. The successful candidate will be involved in this international project working as part of a multidisciplinary team of astronomers and engineers with a wide expertise in Distributed Computing Infrastructures, Cloud Computing, Data Science and Radio Astronomy. S/he will be the sysadmin of the espSRCSRC computing cluster, a cloud platform (based on OpenStack) which provides computing services based on Virtual Machines and a Kubernetes cluster, and storage service based on a Ceph system.

Role:
The successful applicant will join the espSRC at the IAA-CSIC (Granada, Spain) led by Lourdes Verdes-Montenegro, the coordinator of the Spanish participation in the SKA project. The  responsibilities of the position will include:

  • Maintaining the current computing and storage infrastructure of the espSRC at the IAA-CSIC
  • Contributing to carry out potential expansions of the computing infrastructure of the espSRC: identify technical requirements, support hardware procurements, and the platform expansion
  • Deploying tools and services on the espSRC platform
  • Providing technical user support

Qualifications:
 Candidates must hold a PhD or MSc degree in computer science or related fields (e.g. physics, mathematics). We are looking for proactive candidates with good communication skills in English and expertise in several of these aspects:

  • System administration and application deployment (using e.g Ansible)
  • Linux environment, bash scripting
  • Cloud platforms: Openstack, Ceph, containers and orchestrators (e. g. Kubernetes)
  • Distributed Computing Infrastructures
  • Source Control Systems (e.g. GIT)

In addition to the above, knowledge of the following topics would be a distinct advantage:

  • Deployment and customization of JupyterHub
  • Software development in Python
  • Development and deployment of web services and web applications
  • Astrophysics domain software
